Website redesign for Booker Prize winning author

A successful author, Penelope Lively’s writing career began in 1970. Over the course of the next 45 years, she has continued to write over 50 books of fiction and non-fiction for adults and children alike. Now was the time to have a website that could showcase her many novels and short stories all in one place.

The focus of any website should be its content, but as web designers, it’s sometimes easy to get carried away and ‘over design’ a site for the sake of it. For Penelope, we were keen to keep the design simple and not to over-elaborate. Therefore, throughout the site, the attention is firmly on her literary back catalogue.

Web Design

So what is web design? The very phrase is one of those umbrella terms that cover a lot more than ‘just’ building a website. Loosely, it’s a culmination of ideas and planning, plus designing and building layouts that include carefully chosen fonts, images, graphics, colour palettes, and other features that make a good website great.

To get to that point though, there needs to be a deep understanding of the business or brand the website is being designed for. That involves our own research, plus conversations with the client to understand their customers – how they behave online, what they want, and what their pain points are. Only then can we start to design a website that performs as it needs to.

The end result brings together all these important elements. Producing an easy to use website that goes above and beyond what the client wants to build their brand, business, and online reputation. It will also give their customers an informative and engaging site they’ll want to use and share with others.

User Interface Design

User interface (UI) design is an important step in web design. But rather than focusing on how the site looks and feels, UI design gets stuck into the underlying tech that really makes your website work well, to maximise the user experience.

If your website isn’t working to the best of its ability and customers can’t find what they need, pages don’t load quickly if at all, or the site is slow and clunky, the chances are they’ll ditch you and move on – and they won’t be coming back.

A great UI design will help you reach your chosen web goals by successfully fulfilling your customer’s wants and needs – not just once, but time and again. Creating a defined and engaging path throughout your site – so customers can get the information they want and buy, book, or browse quickly – will keep it intuitive, boosting your conversions and amplifying user engagement. And that all adds up to happy customers who will keep coming back.

UI Design

What Priority Pixels do

The first part of the web design process is visualisation. By understanding your audience and knowing the key factors in the project like your objectives, processes, and specifications, we can start to build a concept. In turn, this will give us the web design basics we need to create an inspiring and on-brand website.

Knowing all this in advance helps the process of creating elements that are consistent across your site. Using an underpinning column and grid system, we can plan headers and footers, logo placement, and site navigation. This stage also helps us define subtleties like page and text colour contrasts and spacing between images and text that work towards a seamless responsive site.

Performance is a key player in web design. Every feature, image, and process on your site has a size attributed to it which, when added up, can leave you with a bloated, slow, and underperforming site. That’s why every element needs to be optimised, giving you a faster and more reactive experience overall.

Part of our design and development process is to continuously review and refine what needs to be displayed on a web page at any given time. Each element is optimised, and with only the necessary elements displayed, response and load times are significantly increased. That gives visitors a faster, more enjoyable, and less frustrating user experience.

Good web design is for everyone, regardless of age and disability. So if your site doesn’t work well or can’t be experienced in the way you intended by certain groups of people for any reason, then the accessibility of your site will be restricted for those users.

WIth every Priority Pixels designed and created site, we make accessibility a top priority. That’s why we’ll meticulously choose contrasting colours and typography to keep legibility easy for anyone who needs it. So whatever your site requirements are, we’ll make sure it can be experienced by everyone.

The functionality of your website is really how well it works across all the web browsers, operating systems, and platforms that are out there today. Everyone will use different methods to visit your site, so making sure it can be viewed on each of them is key, while still looking and working as it should do.

We’ve put in place an in-depth process that ensures all functionality concerns and requirements for your site are met. To get it mobile-friendly and working seamlessly across all platforms and browsers, our team go through many rounds of UX testing and development to get it right.

Project Management

Undertaking any website design project can be a lengthy process covering lots of different areas. To make sure all bases are covered from the start, working closely with you, we’ll create an in-depth project brief covering all your requirements. Then we’ll put a project management plan in place for everything from goals and deadlines, to the areas of work covered and costs involved.

We can also kickstart a discovery phase if the project needs it. This is where we talk with your business’ stakeholders to understand the requirements at a deeper level. If necessary, we might need to complete some smaller tasks to help identify if further work in one or more areas is required.

When all the project areas have been defined, we’ll provide you with a detailed proposal with our recommendations together with a timeline of schedules, deadlines, and costs. It’s really a document that explains both our and your project expectations so everyone can clearly understand the ultimate goals.

Responsive Web Design

Long gone are the days when you were limited to firing up your PC at home to go online. Nowadays, the internet is everywhere and we can access it through computers, smartphones, tablets, and even games consoles. But it’s the desire to get online 24/7 on mobile platforms that have made responsive websites as important as they are.

It’s almost a given that websites should be optimised and mobile-friendly for businesses in today’s digital culture. If your website isn’t, your business looks old, outdated, and out of touch. It will probably lose you more than a few customers and could potentially damage your reputation as well.

For us, designing mobile-friendly and responsive websites is very much part of our process and has been since day one. And as tech has evolved over the years, our developers use CSS3 media queries to design and build sites once only so they still work brilliantly and look fantastic across any device.

Responsive Web Design

Web Development

While every website we create is brilliantly designed, and engaging and functional to the client and end user, web development can be a complex task. We do our best to provide clarity and simplicity throughout the process and make sure we stay up to date with all the latest tech trends that shape the development world.

That way, our sites always work perfectly with the wide variety of social networking platforms and tools, giving you the foundations of a results-based process, while delivering a noteworthy online presence.

Web Development

Performance is everything

At Priority Pixels, performance is an element we add into everything we do. So if we’re not dramatically improving the performance of your online content—whether that’s through web design and development, or any other form of content—then we’re doing something wrong.

Conversions are key to your success, so by working with our in-house experts, we do all we can to make sure they’re always improving. While our web designers continue to create visually stunning and engaging web pages, our conversion pros are analysing, testing, and fine-tuning them to make sure they perform as good as they look.

When it comes to web design, site performance is based – and judged – on how quickly everything loads, moves, and displays. So the more streamlined your site overall, the better the performance.

To get every site performing at its best, our team will review and refine what’s displayed on a web page at any time. This means response and load times are always at their highest, so every site visitor gets the fastest, most positive experience possible. Giving them that level of satisfaction means they come back more often and are more likely to share your site.

How do we reach optimum performance? There are a number of ‘backend’ ways we can do it, through code optimisation, order of execution, server configuration, and specialised content delivery networks. But there are also specialist tools and apps we use, including:

Google Pagespeed

Google Pagespeed

Another helpful tool from the Google toolbox, Pagespeed is a site performance checker. Though fairly basic, we use it as a good starting point to flag any existing issues. By testing the page URL, Pagespeed will highlight potential CSS or Javascript issues as well as images that need optimising.

One of the better performance monitoring tools, Pingdom gives deep data on how your site is performing out in the real world. Delivering real-user monitoring, page speed testing, server response times, and downtime, Pingdom immediately highlights anything that could be slowing you down.

As a trusted Wordpress development plug-in, Hummingbird is a pro performance and optimisation tool to keep your site running as fast and efficiently as possible. With this in place, you’ll see an increase in page loading times, potentially higher search rankings, and happier site visitors.

Smush Pro

Smush Pro

Large images are usually one of the biggest culprits for slow sites. Smush Pro, another pro-level Wordpress plug-in, scans every image across your entire site, then optimises and resizes them in super quick time. The results will save you space and give your site a speed boost.

YSlow is an open-source extension that sits inside common web browsers to analyse web pages and give its rating on their speed. In sharing best practice advice, it provides suggestions and feedback on where time and performance savings can be made to improve page load times.

Managed Hosting

As a web design agency, we rely on a strong and reliable web hosting infrastructure, which is exactly what we have. Having this in place is a necessity, not only for us and our own website but more importantly, so we can provide the same level of security and support for you too.

Hosting our client’s websites has been part of our web package for many years now. As we build every site we need to go through several processes of testing, but once we’re ready to hit the button, our system’s reliability lets us change from the development site to live, quickly and seamlessly.

Our systems experts work closely with our web developers and are constantly monitoring servers and keeping the web team up to speed with any developments. With our fully managed hosting service, you can rest assured your site is in safe hands from the moment it goes live. And with full support, we’re on hand for advice and support whenever you need it.

Content Management Solutions

In simple terms, a content management system (CMS) lets you add content to your website yourself without needing any real technical skills or web expertise. When we build websites, we use WordPress – the World’s most popular open-source web platform – and that has the ability to add a custom CMS right into your site for total control and flexibility.

By adding a CMS to your site, you’ll be able to upload blogs and news items, images, or anything you need to right from your desk and without needing to wait for someone else to do it. And a CMS custom-designed for your business will mean you’ll be able to increase internal usage across team members and lower your costs in the long run.

Priority Pixels are well accustomed to creating content management systems that are instinctively easy to use and really simple to manage, with very little training needed – though we’ll always be available for any questions. And with over 40% of websites live today (around 68 million of them) using WordPress, you’ll be in good company.

LAMP Stack

In order to build every website, Priority Pixels uses a set of open-source software called a LAMP stack. An acronym, LAMP typically consists of four software components: a Linux operating system, an Apache HTTP server, a MySQL database system, and PHP programming language. All of these elements sit in layers and support each other.

The first layer in every LAMP stack, Linux is a free and open-source operating system that creates the foundation for the stack model with everything else running on top of it.

The second layer in the stack is Apache - an open-source software system for web servers. Sitting on top of the Linux OS, Apache translates what’s typed into a web browser and directs it to the website.

The third layer is MySQL which holds database information looked at by scripts when building websites. MySQL is used by most database-driven platforms including WordPress.

The fourth and final layer of the LAMP stack is PHP. A server-side programming language widely used in web development that contains HTML which is how your site is coded.

How much does a website cost?

The cost of a website is determined by many factors. Websites range in style and size. You may only need a simple one page website, or you may need a complex e-commerce website with several thousand products. The amount of designing you need can also impact on costs. It is always best to create a wish list or a brief so that we can give you accurate costs.

What is website hosting?

Website hosting allows individuals and businesses to display their websites on the Internet. Websites are made up of various files containing the code and databases needed to display the website correctly on a users browser. These files are stored on computers called servers. Servers are kept on 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to ensure your website always remains online. We offer a quality web hosting service, which will keep your website, not only live, but as safe and secure as possible.

What is a domain name?

Your computer connects to a websites server via an IP address, which is a long string of numbers. A domain name is a friendly version of this IP address, so that users can easily remember and identify a website. You need both a domain name and hosting for your website to work.

My website has been hacked, can you help?

Definitely! Our web designers have a huge amount of technical knowledge. We don’t just build websites, we understand how they are put together from the database to the front end. If your website has been hacked please get in touch, we can conduct an audit and either deal with the hacked content there and then or at the very least best advise you on the next steps.

What CMS do you build your websites on?

We build all of our websites on the WordPress open-source Content Management System (CMS). We use the Advanced Custom Field plugin to tailor the back end of the website, ensuring all of our clients can edit their own content with ease. No HTML knowledge required!

If I ask for a quote, what happens next?

We will usually arrange a phone call or if your are based locally, a meeting to get things started. From this initial discussion we can find out more about your business, your audience and your marketing goals. We will put forward our recommendations from information gathered and if you’re happy with what we’ve said, we can put together a project proposal and move forward from there.

I don’t like my current web designer/developer, can I switch to Priority Pixels?

If you aren’t happy with the quality of service you are receiving from your current web designers/developers, then we are more than happy to help out. We have a number of clients that move from other web designers and agencies to us, because they feel they aren’t getting the service they deserve. We can even help transfer your domains and hosting to us. Customer service is very important to us here at Priority Pixels, so if you are thinking of moving your website elsewhere please have a chat with us first to see how we can help.
