Domain registrations are so important to your Google ranking.

Did you know that Google uses over 200 algorithms to measure the authority of a website? It is these algorithms and how well your website performs in them that determines where on Google your website is positioned in the rankings.

Let’s say you own a gym and it is located in London. Now, if someone types ‘Gyms in London’ into Google there would be pages upon pages of organic search results due to the large amount of gyms that are located in London.

So the question is how does someone find your site?

Well the simple answer to that question is they won’t, unless you carry out search engine optimisation (SEO) on your site or pay for a Google Adwords campaign to ensure that you are visible as one of the paid ads on a search page. The other issue is that a Google ad on the search term ‘Gyms in London’ would also be rather expensive. This is due to the large amount of gyms in London competing for that ad space. The cost per click on this basis tends to skyrocket and you may well not have the budget to compete.

Now organic SEO is a slow burner. It takes time to add citations, look into pagespeed, add relevant and engaging content to your website etc etc etc. However, there are a couple of ‘quick wins’ when it comes to SEO. I am not saying if you do these then you will suddenly appear at the top of google because authoritative content always wins when it comes to SEO. In fact we have a client here at Priority Pixels who has never done any SEO to his site whatsoever. But what he has done is produce reams and reams of engaging, relevant and authoritative content along with images and videos over a huge number of years. His website (which is his hobby by the way) gets over 30,000 hits every month! Now this in itself is SEO but he just didn’t realise it and as such he is now considered to be the authority on the subject his website promotes.

So if you want to be at the top of google organically be prepared to spend a large amount of your time carrying out SEO. Now you are meant to be running your business, so how can you concentrate on doing just that when your time is spent carrying out SEO? Well, that is why businesses all over the world, large and small, engage Digital Marketing Agencies such as Priority Pixels to carry out the SEO for them. So that they, as business owners, can spend their time concentrating on their business.

That aside, one of the quick wins for SEO is domain registrations. Most websites have a domain that is renewed on an annual basis rather than being registered for a longer period of time.

Why is this important?

Well longer domain registrations are not only a way of you potentially getting your domain at a cheaper cost but are also a way of telling Google how serious you are about you business.

Let’s say you register your domain on an annual basis. If one of your competitors has a domain registered for say 5 years then they will rank higher than you. If all your competition has their domains registered on an annual basis and you register yours for 5 years then you will rank higher. So whether your competitors are registering their domains for longer periods of time or not then it is worth you registering your domain for as many years as you can. Whether it’s to catch up with your competition or to beat them.
