Why WordPress Maintenance & Security Matters

WordPress maintenance encompasses the regular technical tasks required to keep your website secure, fast and functional. This includes updating core software, managing plugins, monitoring security threats, optimising performance and ensuring compatibility across all components.

Without proper maintenance, WordPress websites become vulnerable to security breaches, experience performance degradation and risk breaking when updates are applied incorrectly.

Priority Pixels is Cyber Essentials certified, the UK Government security certification scheme backed by the National Cyber Security Centre, which independently verifies our controls for firewalls, secure configuration, user access, patching and malware protection. Client websites are hosted in a UK data centre independently certified to ISO 27001 for information security, ISO 20000 for IT service management and ISO 14001 for environmental management. Professional maintenance and security transforms these risks into a managed, predictable service backed by independent certification that protects your investment and reputation.

Our Maintenance & Security Services

Proactive Security Monitoring That Prevents Breaches Before They Happen

WordPress powers over 40% of the web, making it a prime target for attackers. Without regular updates and security monitoring, websites become vulnerable to malware, hacking attempts and data breaches. Priority Pixels combines continuous malware scanning with alerting and active monitoring of WordPress core and plugin vulnerability disclosures through our own reporting platform, so threats get actioned, not just logged.

Performance Optimisation Keeping Your Website Fast Under Load

Unmaintained WordPress websites inevitably slow down. Database tables accumulate overhead, plugins conflict with each other, and outdated code creates bottlenecks. Regular maintenance includes database optimisation, plugin audits and performance tuning that ensures your website loads quickly and responds smoothly, keeping visitors engaged and improving search rankings.

Uptime Monitoring and Rapid Response When Issues Arise

Every minute of downtime costs money and damages your reputation. Proactive maintenance identifies potential issues before they cause outages, from monitoring disk space to detecting plugin conflicts. When problems do arise, our documented response SLAs kick in. Urgent incidents such as a website being offline or compromised receive a response within two hours during working hours, worked until resolved. High and Medium severity issues are covered by their own documented response times.

Plugin and Theme Compatibility Testing in Staging Environments

WordPress is a complex ecosystem where themes, plugins and core updates must work in harmony. Without careful compatibility management, updates can break forms, disable features or corrupt layouts. Professional maintenance includes staging tests, compatibility checks and rollback procedures that keep everything working as intended.

Compliance Maintenance for Accessibility and Security Standards

For public sector organisations and regulated industries, compliance isn't optional. Websites must maintain WCAG accessibility standards, UK GDPR data protection requirements and industry-specific regulations. Priority Pixels is ICO registered under ZB845765 and operates in line with the UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018. Ongoing maintenance ensures these standards are preserved through updates, with regression testing and compliance monitoring preventing costly violations.

Ongoing WordPress Care That Protects Your Digital Investment

Your WordPress website represents significant investment in design, development and content. Without proper maintenance, this investment degrades - security vulnerabilities emerge, performance declines and eventually expensive emergency fixes or complete rebuilds become necessary. Regular maintenance protects and extends the life of your digital assets.

Our WordPress Maintenance and Security Services

Our WordPress maintenance and security services keep your website updated, protected and available. Delivered by an in-house UK team, with documented response times, encrypted offsite backups and security controls independently verified under Cyber Essentials.

WordPress Updates & Patch Management

WordPress core, plugin and theme updates are applied on a scheduled basis with compatibility testing on staging first and rollback if anything breaks. Operating system security updates are applied automatically. Continuous scanning identifies known vulnerabilities across core files, plugins and themes. High risk and critical patches are applied within 14 days, with critical zero-day issues addressed on the day. Update status is visible in the client reporting platform.

Uptime & Performance Monitoring

Round the clock uptime monitoring on our own reporting platform tracks every website we maintain and feeds directly into our response process. Plugin performance is audited, database overhead is kept in check and page delivery is optimised through server-level caching and content delivery networks so your website stays fast under load. When an outage is detected, urgent incidents receive a response within two hours during working hours.

Malware Detection & Removal

Automated systems perform daily deep scans to detect malware, backdoors and malicious code injections. When threats are detected our team manually investigates, completely removes the infection and identifies how it gained access. We then implement additional hardening to prevent reinfection through the same vector. File integrity monitoring on core WordPress files flags unauthorised changes immediately.

Access Control & Authentication

Protecting administrative access prevents unauthorised changes to your website. Client credentials are held in Keeper, our enterprise password manager, with access limited to named staff on individual accounts and multi factor authentication where the system supports it. Access is granted on director approval, and when a member of staff leaves, their credentials are revoked and any shared client credentials are rotated as part of our documented joiners and leavers process. Login attempts on hosted websites are monitored and limited, with automatic blocking of suspicious activity patterns that indicate brute force attacks.

Security Incident Response

Security incidents are managed through a structured ticketing process with response times set by severity. An urgent incident such as a website being offline or compromised receives a response within two hours during working hours, worked until resolved. Our documented Incident Response Plan covers detection, containment, investigation, remediation and post-incident review. Where we act as a subprocessor and personal data is affected we commit to informing the customer without undue delay so they can meet their own reporting obligations.

Backup Management & Disaster Recovery

Nightly backups are encrypted with AES-256 before they leave the server and stored offsite in Amazon S3, separately from the live environment. Standard retention is 14 days with a 28 day option, plus on demand backups before any significant change. Restores are documented and performed in practice during maintenance and incident recovery, and for websites under a maintenance agreement we run scheduled quarterly test restores where required. In the event of a security breach or data loss, we can quickly restore your website to a clean, pre-incident state.

WordPress Maintenance & Security FAQs

How often do you update WordPress websites?

We check for updates weekly and apply them systematically after compatibility testing on staging. Critical security updates and high risk vulnerabilities are applied within 14 days, with critical zero-day issues addressed on the day. We maintain detailed logs of all updates through our own reporting platform and can provide reports showing what was updated and when.

What happens if an update breaks something?

We test updates in staging environments where possible before applying them to live websites. If an issue occurs despite testing, we immediately roll back the problematic update and investigate alternative solutions. Our backup systems ensure we can always restore your website to a working state.

Do you provide emergency support outside business hours?

Support is delivered through a structured ticketing process with response times set by severity. Urgent incidents such as a website being offline or compromised receive a response within two hours during working hours, worked until resolved. High severity incidents receive a response within four hours with a two working day resolution target. Medium severity incidents receive a response within four hours with a five working day resolution target. Extended and out of hours cover can be arranged under a bespoke service level agreement for mission-critical websites.

Can you maintain custom WordPress development?

Yes, we support custom themes, plugins and bespoke functionality. During onboarding, we review your custom code to understand specific requirements and dependencies. We then incorporate these into our maintenance procedures, ensuring custom elements receive the same careful attention as standard components.

How do you handle website backups?

Backups are taken nightly by the hosting platform, encrypted with AES-256 before they leave the server and stored offsite in Amazon S3, separately from the live environment. Standard retention is 14 days with a 28 day option where a longer history is needed. On demand backups are taken before any significant change. For websites under a maintenance agreement we run scheduled quarterly test restores where required as part of the agreed scope of work.

What security measures do you implement?

Priority Pixels is Cyber Essentials certified, the UK Government scheme backed by the National Cyber Security Centre, which independently verifies our controls for firewalls, secure configuration, user access control, security update management and malware protection. On top of that, our security approach includes multiple layers: firewall protection, malware scanning, brute force prevention, file integrity monitoring, security hardening and regular vulnerability assessments. We also implement two-factor authentication, SSL certificates and security headers. All security events are logged and reported monthly.

What is your incident response SLA?

Urgent incidents (website offline or compromised, data at risk) receive a response within two hours during working hours, worked until resolved. High severity (core function affected) receive a response within four hours with a two working day resolution target. Medium severity (functional issue, no data at risk) receive a response within four hours with a five working day resolution target. Extended and out of hours cover can be arranged under a bespoke service level agreement.

Can you provide documentation for procurement and security due diligence?

Yes. Priority Pixels maintains a formal Security Pack covering our security controls, Incident Response Plan, Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery Plan, Supplier and Subprocessor Register, Asset Register and Government and Law Enforcement Data Request Policy. Supporting evidence including our Cyber Essentials certificate and the hosting data centre’s ISO certifications is available on request.
