Delivering an Accessible Website for Cornerstone Housing

Client overview

Cornerstone Housing is a housing organisation providing accommodation and support services for people with complex needs. Its website plays an important role in communicating services clearly to residents, partners and stakeholders while acting as a central information hub for staff and professionals.

Cornerstone Housing approached Priority Pixels to rebuild its website, replacing a platform that had become difficult to navigate and challenging to manage. The existing site contained a large volume of content spread across inconsistent structures, making it hard for users to find information quickly. Alongside improved usability, the new website needed to meet WCAG 2.2 AA accessibility standards to ensure it was inclusive, compliant and accessible to all users.

Accessibility first: WCAG 2.2 AA compliance

The Cornerstone Housing website has been designed and developed to meet WCAG 2.2 AA standards, with accessibility considered at every stage of the project. From page layouts and navigation to typography and colour contrast, each element was reviewed to support users with a wide range of access needs.

The site supports full keyboard navigation, clear focus states, accessible menus and properly labelled form elements. Content is structured using semantic HTML to ensure compatibility with screen readers and other assistive technologies, allowing users to move through the site with confidence and independence.

For organisations operating within housing and support services, accessibility is essential. Many users may face physical, cognitive or situational barriers when accessing digital services. Meeting WCAG 2.2 AA standards helps Cornerstone Housing provide equitable access to information while supporting compliance with UK accessibility legislation.

Accessible WordPress web design and development

Structuring a content-rich website

Delivering a website of this scale required careful consideration of both user experience and long-term content management. A key challenge was organising a large and varied body of content in a way that remained clear, intuitive and easy to navigate for different audiences.

We began by restructuring the site architecture to create a logical hierarchy, ensuring content was grouped consistently and supported by clear navigation pathways. This approach helps users quickly understand where they are within the site and how to find relevant information, reducing friction and cognitive load. Consistent page layouts and clear headings improve scannability, particularly for users accessing the site on mobile devices.

UI design

Our UI design team carried out a detailed review of the existing website to identify usability issues and structural inefficiencies. Using a human-centred design approach, we focused on clarity, consistency and ease of use across all sections of the site.

Layouts were simplified, visual hierarchy was strengthened and navigation patterns were standardised. The resulting interface supports the organisation’s work without unnecessary complexity, helping residents, professionals and stakeholders engage with information more efficiently.

WordPress development

The website was rebuilt using bespoke WordPress development rather than templates or page builders. This allowed us to maintain full control over accessibility, performance and scalability while ensuring the platform could evolve alongside the organisation’s needs.

The site is fully responsive and has been rigorously tested across modern browsers and devices to ensure a consistent experience. Behind the scenes, we developed a clean and intuitive admin interface, enabling the Cornerstone Housing team to manage content confidently without technical expertise. Custom content structures support ongoing growth while maintaining a clear and organised site structure.

Ongoing support

Following the launch of the new website, Priority Pixels continues to support Cornerstone Housing through ongoing website support and maintenance. This ensures the site remains secure, accessible and performing as expected as content evolves and organisational needs change.

By offering continued technical oversight and responsive support, we help ensure the website remains a reliable, compliant and effective platform that can adapt as Cornerstone Housing’s services and requirements develop.
