LinkedIn Insight Tag Not Tracking Conversions

LinkedIn Insight Tag tracking diagnosis icon

When the LinkedIn Insight Tag is not tracking conversions, the fault usually sits in the tag itself, the conversion rule, the tracking method, the cookie banner or the way results are being compared. Each of these leaves evidence in Campaign Manager or in the browser, so the cause can be proven before anything is changed. Measurement has to be right before any optimisation in LinkedIn advertising for B2B marketing teams can work, because bidding and reporting depend on it.

The checks below run in the order that rules causes out fastest. They start with the status screens in Campaign Manager, move through the tag, the conversion settings, Google Tag Manager and consent, then finish with the Conversions API and the reasons LinkedIn and GA4 rarely agree.

Check the Insight Tag Status Before Anything Else

The Insight Tag status in Campaign Manager shows whether LinkedIn is receiving any signal from your website, which decides where the investigation starts. LinkedIn’s help page on the Insight Tag source status lists three states, found by selecting Measure, then Signals manager, then Insight Tag.

Active means a signal arrived in the past seven days, No recent activity means the last one arrived more than seven days ago and Unverified means LinkedIn has never received one. A new tag needs traffic before it can verify. LinkedIn’s guide to adding the Insight Tag to your website says validation can take anywhere from a few minutes to 24 hours after a page loads.

Visit a page carrying the tag yourself and check again the next day before changing any code. A tag that moves to Active on its own was never broken and simply had no visits to report.

Fix an Unverified or Inactive Insight Tag

An Unverified status after 24 hours means the tag on the page is missing, damaged or reporting to a different account. LinkedIn’s guide to troubleshooting the Insight Tag lists the faults that cause this most often.

  • Part of the code was missed when it was copied from Campaign Manager
  • The JavaScript was edited after copying instead of being pasted exactly as supplied
  • Straight quotation marks were turned into curly ones when the code was pasted
  • The partner ID in the code belongs to a different ad account from the one holding the conversions
  • A firewall or content blocker stops requests to LinkedIn domains such as snap.licdn.com and px.ads.linkedin.com

To check the partner ID on a live page, view the page source and find the number after _linkedin_data_partner_id near the start of the tag code. Compare it with the partner ID shown against the Insight Tag in the ad account that owns the conversion.

On WordPress websites the tag is usually added through the theme footer, a tracking plugin or a tag manager container. LinkedIn recommends placing the code just before the closing body tag in the global footer. Check that a theme update or plugin change has not removed it and that it has not been added twice through two different routes.

Confirm the Tag Fires in the Browser

The browser developer tools give a definite answer on whether the tag fires, without waiting a day for Campaign Manager to update. LinkedIn’s troubleshooting page describes the check, which looks for a request to ads.linkedin.com that returns a 302 status code.

  1. 1

    Open the Page

Load a page that should carry the tag in an ordinary browser window. Turn off any ad blocker for the test, since it can stop the request.

  2. 2

    Inspect the Network

Right click the page, choose Inspect and open the Network tab. Reload the page so every request is captured.

  3. 3

    Filter for LinkedIn

Type ads.linkedin.com into the filter box. A matching request should appear each time the page loads.

  4. 4

    Read the Status Code

Look for a 302 status code on that request. A missing request or a different code points to the tag or a blocked domain.

LinkedIn also suggests browser extensions such as Ghostery for a quick spot check, while warning that seeing the tag listed is not enough on its own. An error such as “error no PID” can still appear in the extension. The fix for that error is an updated tag from LinkedIn.

Read the Conversion Status in Campaign Manager

Each conversion has its own status, which can only reach Active once the Insight Tag itself is active. LinkedIn’s guide to conversion statuses in Campaign Manager defines each one, found under Measure and then Conversion tracking.

Status What LinkedIn means Where to look next
Active The last signal was received in the past three days The date range, conversion window and attached ad sets
No recent activity The last signal was received between four and seven days ago Whether anyone has reached the conversion page recently
Inactive The last signal was received more than seven days ago Whether a website change removed the tag or the conversion page
Unverified No activity has been detected from the website The Insight Tag code, the partner ID and the URL rules
Awaiting activity A Conversions API conversion is waiting for its first event The API or partner connection that should be sending events

For Conversions API conversions, Awaiting activity changes to No activity detected when nothing arrives within 48 hours. An Active status with a Low Match Rate warning means events are arriving but carry too little information for LinkedIn to match them to member profiles.

LinkedIn’s guide to troubleshooting Insight Tag conversions adds a check that is easy to miss. If the tag is active but a page load conversion stays Unverified, the URL of the conversion page probably does not match the URL rules set on the conversion.

Attach the Conversion to the Right Ad Sets

A conversion only records results for the ad sets it is attached to, so a working tag can still show nothing against a campaign. LinkedIn’s guide to setting up Insight Tag conversions states that conversions are only tracked when attached to an ad set. Automatic selection only covers ad sets that are Active, Draft or Paused when the conversion is created.

Ad sets created later pick up conversions automatically based on the conversion category and the objective chosen. An ad set with a different objective can therefore be left without one. Open the conversion from the Conversion tracking page and check the number in the Ad sets selected column, or edit each ad set and look at its Conversion tracking section.

Check the conversion window and attribution model while the conversion is open. These settings sit on the conversion rule and change how many results each ad set is credited with, as the final section explains.

Choose Between URL Based and Event Specific Conversions

Page load conversions count visits to a URL, while event specific conversions count an action such as a button click. Choosing the wrong one for the way a form behaves leaves real conversions unrecorded.

Automatic

Website Actions

Collects actions such as button clicks, page visits and form submissions without extra code. The Insight Tag must already be on the website.

URL Based

Page Load

Counts a conversion when a member loads a page that matches the URL rule. It suits forms that send people to a separate thank you page.

Action Based

Event Specific

Counts a conversion when code added to a link or button runs. It suits forms that confirm on the same page without loading a new URL.

Legacy

Works without the Insight Tag but relies only on third party cookies. LinkedIn describes it as less accurate and it cannot use enhanced conversion tracking.

Page load rules match a URL that starts with, equals or contains the text you enter. LinkedIn’s help on URL parameters for page load conversions advises including www only if visitors see it in the address bar.

A rule that equals /thankyou will miss a form that lands on /thankyou123 or a URL with extra parameters, so make a test conversion and copy the exact address the form reaches. LinkedIn’s guide to comparing conversions with third party reporting uses that example. It also points out that the landing page in the ad needs a route to the form, because a conversion is only counted when someone served an ad goes on to reach the conversion URL.

Event specific conversions need one more condition to work. LinkedIn’s guide to switching to an event specific Insight Tag conversion says the sitewide Insight Tag must load first on the page, so a button script that runs before the main tag records nothing.

Set Up Google Tag Manager Without Gaps

Google Tag Manager adds the Insight Tag through a template, so most faults come from the template, the trigger or a container that was never published. LinkedIn’s guide to adding the Insight Tag to Google Tag Manager uses the LinkedIn InsightTag 2.0 template from the Community Template Gallery, with the partner ID entered and an All Pages trigger.

The container must then be submitted to publish it, because saved changes stay in the workspace until that step is done. Where an older LinkedIn tag is still in the container, LinkedIn recommends adding InsightTag 2.0, confirming it works and then pausing the original tag.

Event specific conversions through Google Tag Manager also need the conversion ID from Campaign Manager. LinkedIn’s guide to event specific conversion tracking with Google Tag Manager covers where to copy it. The tag then needs a trigger that matches the action, such as a form submission or a click on a specific button.

Tip

Test in Preview mode before publishing the container. Google’s guide to preview and debug mode explains that Tag Assistant shows which tags fired and in which order, so you can confirm the LinkedIn tag fires on every page and the conversion tag fires only on the conversion action.

Check the consent settings on each LinkedIn tag at the same time. Google’s help on consent mode support in Tag Manager explains that a tag set to require additional consent only fires when every consent type it lists has been granted.

A tag that never fires after a visitor accepts cookies usually waits for a consent type the banner does not send. Test in a fresh browser session, accept the banner and watch the LinkedIn tags in Preview mode to see whether they move from not fired to fired.

Account for Cookie Consent and Browser Restrictions

UK visitors who decline advertising cookies should not be tracked by the Insight Tag, so some conversion loss is expected on any compliant website. The ICO’s guidance on how the PECR rules apply to online advertising says storage and access technologies used for online advertising need consent. It adds that measuring how well campaigns perform forms part of that same consent.

The rules are not limited to cookies. The ICO’s explanation of what storage and access technologies are includes tracking pixels, scripts and tags, so a banner that loads the Insight Tag before a visitor chooses is a compliance problem rather than a tracking fix.

Browsers that block third party cookies also reduce what LinkedIn can record. LinkedIn notes that Safari blocks them by default. Its help on first party cookies on the Insight Tag explains that enhanced conversion tracking adds a click ID to landing page URLs so the tag can use first party cookies. Leaving it off can reduce tracking accuracy and lose conversions.

The setting is a checkbox in the Insight Tag settings within Signals manager. Changing it needs a billing admin, account manager or campaign manager role. Check too that redirects between the ad and the landing page keep the query string, because the click ID travels in the URL. Our guide to PPC tracking after third party cookies covers how these restrictions affect every ad platform.

Warning

LinkedIn’s Insight Tag FAQs say the tag should not be installed on pages that collect or contain sensitive data, such as consumer pages for certain medications or pages where people manage financial accounts or medical appointments. Healthcare and financial services websites should agree with their legal advisers which pages carry the tag.

Pages left without the tag for this reason cannot act as page load conversion URLs. Choose a different step in the journey as the conversion point, or send the conversion through the Conversions API using only the data your legal advisers have approved.

Add the Conversions API for Sturdier Tracking

The Conversions API sends conversion data from a server or partner platform straight to LinkedIn, which fills gaps that browser tracking leaves. LinkedIn’s overview of the LinkedIn Conversions API says it does not rely on cookie based tracking. Events sent through the API and the Insight Tag are deduplicated, so the same event is only counted once.

Partner integrations include Google Tag Manager, HubSpot, Salesforce and Zapier, while a direct integration needs developer time and ongoing maintenance. The API also brings offline events such as qualified leads from a CRM back into Campaign Manager, which suits B2B accounts where the real outcome happens weeks after the form.

The Google Tag Manager route needs a server container as well as a web container. LinkedIn’s guide to creating conversions with the Conversions API and Google Tag Manager recommends setting the server container up through Stape from inside Campaign Manager. Our guide to server side tagging explains how a server container works and when it is worth adding.

Integrations that stop sending data have a few known causes. LinkedIn’s conversion status guide notes that Google Tag Manager access tokens added before November 2024 expired one year after creation. The token also has to be reauthenticated by a current colleague if the LinkedIn member who set up the integration leaves the organisation.

The API is only as useful as the data behind it, so lead records need to reach a CRM reliably first. Our guide to WordPress CRM integration covers connecting website forms to the sales pipeline.

Explain Gaps Between LinkedIn and GA4

Conversion reporting comparison icon

LinkedIn and GA4 count conversions differently, so a gap between them is expected even when tracking works. LinkedIn’s guide to the LinkedIn conversion window sets a default of a 90 day click and 90 day view window. Windows of 1, 7, 30 or 90 days are available for any conversion, with longer options for some Conversions API and CSV conversions.

View through conversions are a major source of the difference, because LinkedIn credits people who saw an ad and converted later without clicking. Analytics tools only see the later visit, so they credit the session to whichever channel brought the person back.

LinkedIn uses a last touch model and counts one conversion per member per action within the window, apart from Purchase and Add to Cart, which count every event. Its explanation of the conversion attribution model also notes that some conversions are measured with predictive models or on device tracking to protect member privacy, so totals will not match an analytics tool line for line.

Changes to a conversion window only apply from the date of the change. Compare like for like periods after any edit and line up the window, the conversion definition and the date range before deciding that tracking has broken.

Our guide to using LinkedIn Ads analytics covers reading these reports once the numbers can be trusted. Our look at LinkedIn retargeting ads shows what the same Insight Tag data does for audiences. FAQs

How do you check if the LinkedIn Insight Tag is working?

Open Signals manager under Measure in Campaign Manager and check the Insight Tag status, which shows Active when a signal has arrived in the past seven days. For a live check, open the browser developer tools on a page carrying the tag, filter the Network tab for ads.linkedin.com and look for a request that returns a 302 status code.

Why does a LinkedIn conversion still show as Unverified?

Unverified means LinkedIn has detected no activity from the website for that conversion, usually because the Insight Tag is missing, has been edited or carries the wrong partner ID. Visit the page with the tag yourself and wait up to 24 hours before working through the tag checks, since a new tag cannot verify until it receives traffic.

Why does LinkedIn report more conversions than GA4?

LinkedIn counts view through conversions from people who saw an ad without clicking it. Its default conversion window runs for 90 days after a click or a view. Analytics tools only see the later visit, so they credit that conversion to whichever channel brought the person back to the website.

Does the LinkedIn Insight Tag need cookie consent in the UK?

The ICO says storage and access technologies used for online advertising need consent. That consent also covers measuring how well campaigns perform. The tag should wait until a visitor accepts advertising cookies, which means conversions from visitors who decline will not be recorded.
