Health Connections is an initiative from the NHS that provides a service for local communities, connecting people with support services in their area. While needing local online presence across the country to get the message out, the main priority was to enable a link up with existing GP patient record systems.
Over recent years, the NHS has been building their Health Connections platform. Linking with the highly successful EMIS patient record system used by GPs and surgeries up and down the country, the Health Connections directory contains information on health and wellbeing support and services in local areas.
By using the directory, GPs and support staff can advise patients on where they can receive additional care and support in their local community. Health Connections – Mendip was the first in a series of standalone websites that helps members of the community get connected with support groups and resources in their area.
To help the Health Connections website launches, the Priority Pixels team looked at the main priorities for the sites that included:
Creating each WordPress website was the first step. To create consistency for Health Connections, each site uses a similar layout which in turn provides an easy user experience. We kept it simple so users can search local support groups, print or download any information required, or find out more about Health Connections.
WordPress support is also vital for each of the Health Connections team. Giving them detailed help and support in the early stages of their website build, allows team members to have control over their site content from the start. It also gives them the ability to update the site with fresh content whenever they need to in the long term.
The real key to this ongoing project is the linking of the Health Connections services directory to the EMIS patient records for each specific area. Not every area offers the same support services, so an individual list is required for every site. By working with each Health Connections team leader to curate their own list, Priority Pixels can get it linked to the main EMIS system. And patient record confidentiality is critical, so we ensure the latest SSL certificate is always in place, as well as secure hosting and unique domain names.
