Google Warns Website Owners To Move To HTTPS By October 2017

Posted: 19th September 2017

Back in 2014 Google announced that security was a top priority for them. As a result they confirmed they wanted encourage all business owners to move away from non secure HTTP websites to more secure HTTPS websites. They also confirmed that having an secure HTTPS website would be a ranking factor. You can read the article here.

Fast forward to 2017 and Google have now confirmed that all non secure HTTP websites and web pages will be flagged with a non secure warning and that this will be rolled out in October 2017! You can read this article here.

According to Google “Passwords and credit cards are not the only types of data that should be private. Any type of data that users type into websites should not be accessible to others”. As a result they have now confirmed that it “will show the ‘Not secure’ warning when users type data into HTTP sites”.

As a result Google is now sending out emails to Search Console users saying that if you don’t switch from your non-secure HTTP website to HTTPS, then you risk losing traffic and have a ‘NOT SECURE’ notification pop-up on your website for all Chrome users. The deadline is October 2017.

So what do you need to do?

In order to move your website to HTTPS you need to install a Secure Socket Layer (SSL) Certificate. So if you haven’t done so already do so before October 2017 otherwise your website may well be penalised.
